The Art of Being an Entrepreneur

Come on, admit it; You have thought of it… of being an Entrepreneur?

From time to time, nearly all of us have toyed with the idea.  Working for yourself – no one to  tell you what to do – lots of freedom to “run the show” – Right?

People become entrepreneurs for many different reasons.  Some of us do it because we want to  do what we love; others take it on to serve or help other people.  Still others, either because they are out of work or hate what they are currently doing, just do it because they need to pay their bills.

Regardless of why you may have entertained this idea, or what your motivation is, research shows that the most successful entrepreneurs are really artists, in one way or the other.

For example, when a painter begins their masterpiece, they are looking at a blank slate. When a sculptor begins their masterpiece, they are looking at a large stone or a  lump of clay. You could ask “What separates the master painter and master sculptor from the rest of the crowd?”

The answer?  The opportunity that they see from that blank piece of stone, lump of clay or white canvas.

Just as the artist sees that opportunity, the true entrepreneur envisions their masterpiece.  They see that opportunity – the same one that the master painter or sculptor sees.

It takes a true artist to see something out of nothing and an even greater artist to begin the process to create the situation to match what they envision.  Sometimes no one else can see what the entrepreneur sees as a possible business opportunity.  Others may even tell them that they are nuts for even thinking it is possible.  Well, that kind of craziness can either set you on the path to prosperity or ruin; only you can say; only YOU know what is possible for you.

Take the old adage with a new twist – “If you do what everyone else has done, you will have what everyone else has.”

The entrepreneur who is willing to do what no one else has done CAN have what no one else has.  It is the willingness to take the risk, to give up immediate, short term gratification for long term fulfillment.  Entrepreneurs work hard – nights and weekends – usually with little initial gain, because they believe in their dream.

Their belief drives them to do what they do in the face of uncertainty, fear and doubt, and all the naysayers insistence that what they say they can do is impossible.  That is why, when they do succeed, they create a true masterpiece.

Is that what YOU want?

True masterpieces are lives that are built around your passion and the value that you can wake up doing what you love every day AND actually make a good  living doing it.

The important thing is making sure that you know how to make your dream “pay off.”

It is one thing to be an artist and create a life you love – it is altogether another to make that dream pay off.

The happiest entrepreneurs figure out how to build systems that work around the things they enjoy doing; that somehow contribute to the lives of others so that THEY want you to succeed.  These successful entrepreneurs then utilize the efforts of everyone and everything to be successful.  They realize that they cannot do it on their own.  It takes resources, technology and other people to support them on their path to creating that entrepreneurial success.

Can you do it?  Are you that Entrepreneurial Artist?  Are you someone who can take your dreams and hopes to the next level?

If you would like to take this inquiry one step further, begin by asking yourself how you can continue to do the thing that you enjoy most while also serving others.  How can you serve the greatest number of people AND generate enough revenue to support your current and future lifestyle?  When you answer those questions and can design a lifestyle that you love, you are a true Entrepreneur Artist!

Let’s look at the six primary steps you can take today to become an Entrepreneurial Artist: right now!

  1. Look for the opportunities in life that contribute to you AND others.
  2. Build your business around your passion and values.
  3. Believe in yourself and what you see is possible.
  4. Be willing to take on whatever obstacles lie between you and creating your masterpiece business.
  5. Figure out how you can make money and serve people while doing what you love
  6. No one operates or succeeds in a vacuum.  Be available and open to the support of others and to incorporate their learning into your business.
