Distinct, Yet Both Valuable…

One of the most frequently asked questions of those of us in the Coaching/Consulting field is what’s the difference between Coaching and Consulting?  While these two words or descriptors are often substituted for one another, the traditional definition of these two could be said to be:

Consulting in the traditional sense is an organizational problem solver who is not an employee of the enterprise. They may identify problems, distinguish and/or implement solutions directly or make recommendations for those who can do so, and generally performs as an impartial “advisor” or proponent for an organization.  Consultants use ‘diagnostic tools’, ask clarifying questions, present solutions, optimal plans or specific recommendations for solving problems. Effective consulting usually focuses primarily on external, measurable, informational data and solutions to problems within an organization.

Coaching, distinct from consulting, is the process of working directly with individuals, usually one on one or in groups.  Coaches work with the individuals to discover problems, strentgths and weaknesses and together, explore possible actions  and  solutions and to impact current circumstances. All results depend on the client’s commitment, willingness to alter or adjust their behavior, and their productivity in those areas they and their coach have identified. Masterful coaching usually focuses on behavior, relationship and client’s self generated solutions.

Summary:

1. Organizations, businesses and individuals hire consultants to bring them solutions.

2. Individuals hire Coaches to help them uncover and support them to discover and mplement their own solutions.
